Noise Records : Oomph! Interview - Dynamica 6/96

At the end of October 'Wunschkind' the new album by Oomph will be released. Prior to the release 'Dero' Oomph's vocalist answered some questions:

- Oomph often is characterized as 'an enraged threesome trying to find themselves'. Is that true for your new album and what is it you're trying to find through 'Wunschkind'?

Outsiders believe us to be 'enraged', because listening to our kind of music helps to get rid off stress and aggression. I don't want to say if we didn't have our music, we'd be involved in fights continuously - that to me is the most primitive form to solve any conflicts - but I'm sure that without the music I'd be more autoaggressive than I am anyway. Contrary to public opinion I believe getting rid off your aggressions by abusing yourself is the most intelligent way to bundle up and filter your rage and isn't primitive at all. Believe me, if everybody would be a little bit more autoaggressive we did't have nearly as many wars, rapes and any other kind of abuse. That gets me to 'Wunschkind'. The album is about abuse regardless whether it be abuse of power, abuse of intellect or abuse of the soul or physical abuse. Which kind of abuse is the worst I can't say and everyone probably feels very different towards a certain kind of abuse. In my opinion you're only 'powerful', if you are aware of your own power without using it.

- When you wrote the songs to 'Defekt' you claimed, that it was like therapy to you. Is there any connection between 'Wunschkind' and your childhood?

The writing of lyrics to me always means self-awareness, searching myself and if I'm lucky finding myself. Whether lyrics can be therapeutic I can't say, because I had to find out, that writing lyrics can also mean inflicting more pain. But like I mentioned before, I'm autoaggressive especially in the emotional sense. The theme of 'Wunschkind', in its sarcastic, cynic and ironic portrayal, most likely has something to do with my own childhood. Even though I didn't have to want for anything (other than kids in a lot of other countries) I often was pushed around by my parents. Especially on the emotional side of things my parents' fights were often fought on the backs or rather the souls of my brother and myself, perverted! That's why I like the twisted meaning of the title track 'Wunschkind' . I'm of the opinion that if you can't come to terms with your own fouled up soul then you're not able to raise children. Unfortunately a lot of potential parents donÕt even think about whether they are emotionally crippled or not before deciding to have children.

- The topic of 'Wunschkind' also encompasses love. How have you experienced love during your childhood and are you able to give love?

I can't say that I wasn't loved by my parents, but the emotions were always alternating between 'love and hate. As I said before, it wasnÕt hate towards me but hate towards themselves that was projected onto me, as is common practice. Having always been confronted with this continuous back and forth of emotions, until this day I have a problem with receiving and giving love and joy because I live in constant fear of this love being rejected or taken away.

- How do you feel about children. Do you feel sorry for them being born? Do you think you'd be strong enough to raise a child?

I only feel sorry for children that are being abused in body and/or soul by irresponsible parents. At the time I don't feel strong enough to raise a child, because I still have to come to terms with my own childhood.

- Kids are the future and the hope of this world we live in. Do you have hope (in regard to your song 'Defekt')?

No. I don't really have any hope seeing the decline of the environment and humanity.

- How do you interpret the song 'Krüppel'? The lyrics say '... you swing the bat'. You surely don't mean it as a demand, but you know that irony times is being misunderstood.

This songs is a very cynic 'thumbs down' on violence and the song is about the perpetrator (in the intellectual sense) and not the victim, who is a crippel in the very sense of the word. Unfortunately it is always the weakest members of society that are being assaulted by these degenerated individuals. I know that often my lyrics are misunderstood but I can't help that certain people aren't able to interpret properly.

- Just like your two previous albums 'Wunschkind' is a concept album. What message are you trying to get across?

I really have said it all. No special message with the index finger raised, just the mirror image of my soul and of society as I perceive it.

-  Any musical changes in your new album?

Contrary to 'Defekt' we have altered a lot more between electronics and guitar, which stresses the concept of the album. Furthermore I like to experiment with my voice, going to the limits, trying to add more facettes.
